Gwen and quests
Im not sure if this ir right forum, so correct me if wrong.
Anyways:
1. What the hell is tapestry shred for? I dont know how I got it or what its for.
2. I believe ive done every pre searing non-class-specific sidequests...... any master list out there to be sure?
3. Do I get anything for giving all these flowers to Gwen? and the cape?
[edit]
Also, ive only been able to find 3 Necro trainers and 2 monk trainers in pre searing. Is that all?

Party with someone so you can open the gate in the wall and fight some Charr camping north of the wall.

Yeah, been to her. Then she gives you candles mission? If that is the one you are talking about that is the one I mentioned I saw in the catacombs.

Another nerco guy in the catacombs can be found deep inside. You will most likely run into him if you do the moa bird quest. Other than that the catacombs is a pretty cool place - linking Green Hills country and Ashford Abbey together.

Ok. I know this may sound weird, but could somebody answer question #1 and let us know just what in the hell that stupid cape is really for. I want to throw it away and I am sick of shouting for help in every town I go to just to get no response. ....../sigh Gwen Blows...

The necromancer deep in the catacombs gives you the tooth from the charr that's been using the catacombs to move around.
Also, the catacombs link more places than just Green Hills and Ashford Abbey, I found a way out into Wizard's Folly too.
As to Question 1. I heard that the Tapestry Shred is used near the end of the game to access a secret Gnome Level. Somewhat akin to using Wirt's Leg in Diablo 2 to get to the Cow Level.

Gwen is useful in pre-searing - she is the closest thing to a henchman I could find. Once you hook her up with a flute she casts spells of healing, protection, etc on you during combat and seemingly randomly. She talks a lot and I find that she usually gives clues as to what the next thing she wants. Who knows, maybe there is a certain set of things that you can do to unlock a real quest. Also she has a tendency to talk about upcoming quests as well - including old mack.

I have not noticed anything about her casting spells. She has the flute, does she also need the girlscape for it? I got that tapestry, so I did not bother buying the cape

As soon as she gets the flute she starts casting spells. I'm also pretty certain that if you don't periodically give her a flower, she turns on you and sets you on fire. This is what I assume from reading other threads concerning her.
As for the tapestray shred, I threw it out post-searing, thinking that I had a quest that got erased from the quest menu or the NPC forgot to take the shred. Oh well, I can always start over with a new character.

Ugh...
So the bottom line...
Nobody really knows. I have read virtually every thread on every forum about the tapestry shred. The best answer is a post-searing quest or level. But even that is sketchy. Ohwell, I guess I can take up the slot in storage until I know for sure. I too have a gwen-henchy after three flowers and a flute. I will give the cape and more flowers just out of curiosity. I'll post the results soon.

Post Searing and Gwen
Ok this is to update what I have learned about Gwen since my post durring pre-searing. ______________________________. There I'm done.
Squat! Absolutely Squat! I held onto the shred from pre-searing ascalon until Draknors Forge and nothing. I'm now lvl20 with a shred still in my safe. But I have come to the conclusion that Gwens main purpose is to be a makeshift Healer Henchman. She doesnt do too bad either. She travels well and her music doesnt suck. Her healing... meh. In the end I doubt seriously that the guys at Anet have plans to make use of the tapestry shred other that to enrich the story line a little. As a ranger though when I went into several quests I had quite a group. 1 ranger, 1 pet, a second PC n00by and a Gwen. We never died but I cant say it was to Gwens credit alone.
As to the Tapestry Shred itself... I can only speculate. Maybe she will only begin healing you after she gives it to you. Sort of a way for the cpu to know she can...?

You're level 20, and didn't even find the Girl's Cape? Spoken with her mother?

I do know that you find gwen's second flute in post in what is left of ashford village.
It, like the first one is broken. I am keeping the tapestry. Got a strong gut feeling it AND Gwen will have something important to do much later in the game. I find it very intreguing.

hmm maybe you should off held on to it...
Source: http://www.pixelrage.com/mesmerize/fansitefriday/46/
In another example, you may go on a quest where you are tasked with saving the lives of a group of NPC's. Later on, that group could reappear in order to assist you in another quest. The outcome of a dynamic quest system could mean that the number of lives that you saved earlier would be the precise number of "helpers" that you have on your team when you take part in the later quest.
so perhaps if you hold on to it in a later quest it could be usefull

Green Hills Country, and one in catacombs. I don't think there is a 3rd.
